This gate stands at the end of Corso Garibaldi, the main street of part of the city that was surrounded by walls between the 13th and 14th century (see also the nearby Arco dello Sperandio).

In 1479 a massive donjon was erected to surmount the gate.

To the left of the gate is the church of San Matteo degli Armeni, built in the 13th century.

Cassero di Porta Sant'Angelo

A short distance away there is a street with steps that leads up to the Monte Ripido convent, settled by the Franciscan order in the 13th century. This was the order's studium generale and has a vast library that dates back to the 17th century.

This spot offers a marvellous view over most of Perugia.
