Cars can be rented at Sant'Egido International airport or at the F.S. state run railway station on arrival. Rates are generally much more convenient if the reservation for rental has been made beforehand. Some car rental agencies are affiliated to well-known international agencies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, etc.

A credid card is necessary to rent a car, as well as a national driving licence (or State driving licence from the US) and a valid passport. International driving licence is not required. Make sure that the price quoted is 'turnkey'. Value Added Tax may come as a big surprise. The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which is optional in some countries (USA), may not be optional in Italy.

For those who intend to rent in one city and deliver in another, drop-off charges are added. No drop-off charges are incurred for dropping off your car at different offices in the same city, such as at the airport and in the city centre.
