Lake Trasimeno - The islands - boat tours

The islands of the Trasimene Lake are three: in decreasing order, Isola Polvese, Isola Maggiore, Isola Minore.

The Isola Maggiore, the lake's second largest and the only one still to be inhabited, is a favorite destination for boat tours.



Actually, the island has been transformed into an environmental teaching ground. On the Isola rises a tiny fishing village with houses dating back to the 14th and the 16th century and the Castello Guglielmi (Villa Isabella) of 1885 (a Romantic castle remake) in a serious state of carelessness, not any more practicable. The castle has been built incorporating the former convent and church of St. Francis (of 1328).

According to tradition, St. Francis passed the Lent of 1211 on this island, sleeping on a mass, which is now kept in the chapel near his statue in the place of his landing. The paintings coming from the former church of St. Francis are now kept in the church of S. Salvatore (12th century) in the village, of Romanic-Gothic style, while on top of the hill rises another church, S. Michele Arcangelo (12th century), with fine paintings of the Umbrian school from the late 13th century to the 15th century.

A peculiar characteristic production of the island are the Irish laces, a technique introduced by the Marchesa Elena Guglielmi in 1904, when she brought Irish house-maiden to the island.

Tha A.P.M., Trasimeno Navigation Service, guarantees a regular connection line between the main coastal centres of the Trasimeno and its islands, as well as the Isola Polvese and the Isola Maggiore. This service makes it possible for single tourist to daily enjoy personalised cruises and offers also the possibility to hire boats for excursions on the lake waters.

At the most part of the equipped beaches it is possible to hire rowing boats and wind surfs. The following facilities are also available:
